I am an artist and critical thinker with a particular interest in art as a vehicle for researching and investigating the physical world. I recently completed my practice-led PhD in the Fine Art Department at Northumbria University. My PhD allowed me to bring together 10+ years of experience in the community sector, art world and academia creating a research project that investigated our relationship with space in the current era through a range of creative approaches.
Walking was my primary research tool for investigating a variety of landscapes including cityscapes, abandoned military sites and industrial landscapes. Audio and visual research material collected on the walks, including photography, videos, automatic writing and field notes formed the basis for a series of art works that explored various historical, psychological and topographical features and legacies within each site. My art works explore the interstice between fine art practice and critical research, suggesting alternative practices for investigating space.
